The Experience
Your guide picks you up at 8am from your hotel and drives you straight to Giza, where the three great pyramids—Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure—rise from the plateau. You walk the grounds at your own pace, stand in front of the Great Sphinx with its lion body and the face of King Khafre, and see the Valley Temple where priests once mummified the dead. The scale of it hits differently when you're standing there, not in a photo. Your driver waits with cold water while you take in the view from different angles.
After Giza, you head to the Egyptian Museum in central Cairo. The collection is enormous—over 250,000 artifacts spanning 5,000 years—but the room everyone wants is the Tutankhamun exhibit. Gold masks, jeweled daggers, furniture that was sealed in his tomb for 3,500 years before excavation in the 1920s. You can spend as long as you want here; your guide points out the details but doesn't rush you through. The museum is air-conditioned, which matters in Cairo heat.
The day ends at Khan Khalili, the medieval bazaar in the old city center. Narrow lanes packed with stalls selling spices, antiques, jewelry, textiles, and souvenirs made by local artisans. It's loud and crowded and exactly what it looks like in every travel photo, except you're actually walking through it. Your guide knows the layout and can point you toward specific shops or just let you wander. After that, you're driven back to your hotel.
