Summary

Walk ancient stones in Saqqara then meet Ramses II in Memphis before tracing pyramid secrets at Dahshur

You’ll walk through Saqqara’s peaceful ruins with an Egyptologist guide, touch ancient carvings older than Giza’s pyramids, stand beneath Ramses II’s colossal statue in Memphis, and trace pyramid evolution at Dahshur—all with hotel pickup and lunch if you choose.

experience

What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed when we got to Saqqara was the quiet. Not empty, just—less of the chaos you get at Giza. Our guide, Ayman, handed me a bottle of water and grinned, “Welcome to where it all began.” He pointed out the Step Pyramid of Djoser—older than anything I’d ever seen. The limestone felt rough and cool when I touched it. There were some local kids playing nearby, their laughter echoing off these ancient blocks. Inside one tomb, the wall carvings still had color—imagine that, after thousands of years. I tried to read the hieroglyphs (failed), but Ayman explained how they told stories about daily life. The air smelled faintly dusty and sweet, like old paper and sun-warmed earth.

Next up was Memphis. Honestly, I didn’t expect much—I thought it’d be just another pile of stones—but then you see the Colossus of Ramses II lying there, massive and calm. It’s hard to explain how small you feel next to something that’s survived millennia. There was an older man sweeping near the Alabaster Sphinx who nodded as we passed; he looked like he’d been there forever too. The museum is open-air so you get this mix of birdsong and distant traffic from Cairo drifting in (weirdly peaceful). Lunch was simple but good—flatbread, grilled chicken, tomatoes that tasted like sunshine. If you pick the all-inclusive option it’s covered, which is nice because by then I was starving.

Dahshur surprised me most. The Bent Pyramid is just…oddly beautiful? You can see where they changed their minds halfway through building it—the angle shifts suddenly. Our Egyptologist explained how Sneferu experimented here before getting it right with the Red Pyramid nearby (which looks almost pink in late afternoon light). We walked around the base; sand got in my shoes but I didn’t care. The wind picked up and for a second everything went quiet except for our footsteps crunching on gravel. I still think about that view back toward Cairo—a hazy line on the horizon—and how old everything felt compared to my own tiny life.
