The experience

Your guide picks you up from your hotel in an air-conditioned car and drives you first to Saqqara, where the Step Pyramid of Djoser stands: the oldest colossal stone building in Egypt, built in the 27th century BCE by the architect Imhotep. This pyramid marks the moment Egyptian architecture shifted from flat mastabas to the towering structures that followed. From there you travel to Memphis, the ancient capital, to see the Colossus of Ramses II, a granite statue weighing over 120 tons, and other monuments from the city's reign as the seat of pharaonic power.

After lunch at a high-quality restaurant with views of the pyramids, you head to Giza to walk the pyramid complex itself: the Great Pyramid of Khufu (one of the Seven Ancient Wonders), the pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure, and the Valley Temple of Khafre. Then comes the camel ride: 30 minutes across the Giza plateau with the pyramids in your sight line, a moment most visitors come to Cairo to photograph. Your final stop is the Great Sphinx, the limestone statue carved with a human head and lion's body that has guarded the plateau for 4,500 years.
