The experience

The day starts with pickup from your Cairo or Giza hotel at 8 a.m. in a private air-conditioned vehicle. Your guide meets you there and the three sites unfold in sequence: first the Giza plateau, where you spend about two and a half hours at the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the Pyramid of Khafre, the Pyramid of Menkaure, and the Great Sphinx. The Valley Temple, where priests mummified the pharaohs, sits on the same complex, and from there you get a close-up view of the Sphinx itself, the limestone guardian with a lion's body and the head of King Khafre.

After Giza, the tour continues 27 kilometers southwest to Saqqara, where you spend about two hours. The Step Pyramid of Zoser anchors the visit. It marks a turning point in pyramid design, the bridge between the simple mastaba tombs and the smooth-sided pyramids that followed. Depending on the itinerary, you may also see the Pyramid of Unas, where Pyramid Texts were first inscribed into the burial chamber walls, or the Pyramid of Teti and the Mastaba of Ti, which holds scenes of daily life carved into its walls.

The final stop is Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt dating to 3100 B.C., where the colossal statue of Ramses II and the Alabaster Sphinx stand. This leg takes about an hour. When the tour ends, your driver returns you to your hotel. All entry fees to the three sites are included, as is bottled water throughout the day. You select either a live English-speaking guide or an audio guide when you book.
