The experience
The tour starts with pickup from your hotel in Cairo or Giza and heads straight to the Giza Plateau, where the Great Pyramid, Pyramid of Khafre and Pyramid of Menkaure stand on the western edge of the Nile valley, roughly 13 km southwest of central Cairo. Your Egyptologist guide walks you through each complex, explaining the Fourth Dynasty construction and the role of the valley temples, causeways and mortuary temples that accompany each pyramid. The Great Sphinx (a limestone statue 73 meters long with the body of a lion and the head of a human) faces east from the same plateau, believed to represent Pharaoh Khafre.
From Giza, the tour continues 27 km southwest to Saqqara, where you spend roughly two hours exploring the Step Pyramid built for King Zoser, a pivotal structure in pyramid evolution from simple mastaba to the form that defined the Old Kingdom. You also visit the Pyramid of Unas, smallest of the Old Kingdom pyramids but the first to contain Pyramid Texts: funerary spells carved into subterranean chambers that set the tradition for all later royal burials. The Pyramid of Teti and the Mastaba of Ti, with its scenes of daily life, round out the Saqqara stops.
The final leg takes you to Memphis, the ancient capital dating to 3100 BC, where you see the colossal statue of Ramses II and the Alabaster Sphinx. Your guide then returns you to your hotel. The tour includes a private air-conditioned vehicle throughout, lunch, bottled water and all entry fees. The full day runs 6 to 8 hours depending on pace and your guide's depth at each site.
