The experience

Your guide meets you at your hotel or a designated point and drives you in a private air-conditioned vehicle to the Giza plateau. The tour starts at the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the largest of the three, where your Egyptologist walks you through its construction, history and the unanswered questions that still surround it. From there you move to the Pyramid of Khafre (recognizable by the smooth limestone casing still visible at its peak), and then to the Pyramid of Menkaure, the smallest of the three but no less intricate in its design. At Panorama Point you stop to take in all three pyramids at once, a vantage that makes the scale of the complex clear.

The Great Sphinx comes next, the limestone guardian with a lion's body and human head that has stood on the plateau for over four thousand years. Your guide shares the myths and the theories about its purpose and its age. You then visit the Valley Temple, an ancient structure where mummification rituals took place, giving you a sense of the religious life that surrounded these monuments. The tour concludes at the Grand Egyptian Museum, one of the world's largest archaeological museums, where you have time to walk through the galleries and see statues, artifacts and the modern architecture of the building itself.

The whole experience runs six to eight hours depending on how long you spend at each stop and in the museum. Because it's private, your guide adjusts the pace to what interests you. If you want to linger at the Sphinx or move quickly through the Valley Temple, that's your call. The vehicle is always waiting, and there's no group schedule to keep.
