The Experience

We were already squinting against that pale Cairo sun when our guide, Hossam, waved us out of the van. The Giza Pyramids looked almost unreal from up close — so much bigger than I’d pictured. The air tasted a bit dusty, but not unpleasant. Hossam kept pointing out things I’d never have noticed: weathered graffiti from centuries ago, camels in the distance (one sneezed, which made us all laugh). He explained Khufu’s pyramid was built over 4,500 years ago — my brain just sort of stalled at that number. I tried to pronounce “Menkaure” right; Hossam smiled politely but I’m pretty sure I mangled it.

We stopped for photos at this spot where you can see all three pyramids lined up. It was busy but not chaotic — families, couples, a kid selling postcards who somehow convinced me to buy two. The Sphinx felt smaller than I expected but there was something about its face, half-worn away and still watching everything. There was this moment when the wind picked up and you could smell horses somewhere nearby, mixed with sweet tea from a vendor’s cart. After that we ducked into Khafre’s Valley Temple for a minute of shade before heading back to the car.

The Grand Egyptian Museum is just a short drive away but feels like another planet after all that sand and stone. Cool inside, echoey footsteps on marble floors. Our guide led us straight to Tutankhamun’s treasures — gold everywhere, delicate jewelry behind glass. I lingered by the Solar Boat; it’s huge and somehow graceful. There were so many little details: tiny hieroglyphs on a comb, faded blue paint on a coffin lid. By the end my head was full and my feet were tired in that good way you get after seeing too much history in one day. Still thinking about those ancient fingerprints on stone blocks — kind of wild.
