The Experience

We’d barely settled into the minivan when our guide, Ahmed, grinned and handed me Wi-Fi details (which I promptly forgot — too busy staring out at Cairo’s morning chaos). The city just hums. We rolled past fruit stalls and kids in uniforms until suddenly — there they were. The Giza pyramids. I knew they’d be big but standing in that sandy light, you feel tiny. Ahmed pointed out where the old stones change color from centuries of wind. There was a camel chewing something near the Sphinx; I tried to pet it and got a snort for my trouble. The desert air tasted dry and a little sweet, like dust after rain.

After wandering around the pyramids (and yes, we did the classic camel ride — bumpy but worth it for the view), we headed to the Egyptian Museum. It’s this faded pink building right in downtown Cairo, packed with statues and golden coffins stacked almost carelessly. Ahmed told stories about pharaohs as we shuffled past tourists and school groups. I got stuck on one tiny figurine — so delicate you could almost forget it’s thousands of years old. Lunch was next: warm bread, grilled chicken, tahini that tasted way better than anything at home. We all laughed when Ahmed tried to teach us how to say “delicious” in Arabic; I still can’t get it right.

The last stop was Khan el-Khalili bazaar — honestly overwhelming at first. Colors everywhere: brass lamps, scarves fluttering overhead, men calling out prices or just waving hello. I bought a small box from an old man who insisted on wrapping it three times “for luck.” My shoes picked up dust from the stone alleys; there’s this smell of coffee and something sweet (maybe baklava?) drifting between shops. By late afternoon my head was spinning with sounds and faces — but in a good way.
