The Experience

It started with a joke from our guide, Ahmed—he said if we could pronounce “Mycerinus” correctly on the first try, he’d buy us tea at Khan el Khalili. None of us managed it (I definitely didn’t), but that set the tone: friendly, a bit chaotic, and honestly just real. The drive out from central Cairo felt like slowly peeling back layers of the city—one minute horns and dust, then suddenly those huge shapes on the horizon. The Giza Pyramids really do look impossible until you’re standing right there, sand crunching under your shoes. I remember touching one of the stones—warm from the sun, rougher than I thought—and Ahmed telling us how each block was dragged here thousands of years ago. It’s wild to think about.

The Sphinx is smaller than I expected but somehow more mysterious up close, its face half-erased by time and wind. There was this moment when a camel nearby let out this deep grunt (I jumped a little), and Ahmed just grinned—“That’s his way of saying welcome.” We took photos that probably won’t do it justice. After that, we headed to the Egyptian Museum. Inside it’s cool and smells faintly like old paper and stone dust. Seeing Tutankhamun’s mask—gold catching bits of light—it made me feel tiny in history. There are so many artifacts packed into those rooms; you could spend days there.

Khan el Khalili Bazaar was pure sensory overload—in a good way. Spices everywhere (cinnamon, something sharp I couldn’t place), people calling out prices or just chatting with each other over tea glasses balanced on trays. I tried bargaining for a small brass lamp; pretty sure I paid too much but the seller winked at me anyway. We ended up sitting outside with Ahmed, sipping sweet mint tea while he told us stories about growing up in Cairo and how his grandmother still shops at this market every week. The whole day felt like being dropped into someone else’s rhythm for a while—you know?
