The Experience

We rolled out of Cairo just as the city was stretching awake, our driver weaving through early traffic. The first real sight of the Giza pyramids—well, it hit different than I expected. They’re just there, massive and a little weathered, with camels shifting their weight in the sand nearby. Our guide, Samir, handed me a bottle of water and grinned when I tried to pronounce “Cheops” right (I didn’t). There was this dry wind carrying a mix of dust and something sweet from a tea vendor nearby. We got time to walk around all three pyramids—Cheops, Chephren, Mycerinus—and even that classic Sphinx photo felt less cheesy once you’re actually standing there squinting at it.

The Egyptian Museum is only about 30 minutes’ drive from Giza but it feels like stepping into another world—cooler air inside, that old wood polish smell. Samir led us past crowds straight to Tutankhamun’s mask (it glows under the lights, I swear), then lingered over some battered statues he said most people skip. No photos inside here, which honestly made me pay more attention. There’s so much gold and stone packed in those rooms it almost hums. Lunch was at a nearby spot—flatbread still warm from the oven and tahini that tasted way better than what I’ve had back home.

Khan el-Khalili bazaar is chaos in the best way: copper lamps everywhere, men calling out prices in Arabic and English, kids darting between stalls with trays of mint tea. I tried bargaining for a scarf (badly) while Samir laughed and gave me tips on when to haggle or just smile and walk away. The air smelled like cardamom and grilled meat drifting from somewhere deeper in the maze. We wandered until my feet hurt—in a good way—and I still think about that swirl of color and sound whenever someone asks about Cairo.
