The Experience
I stepped out of the van and there they were—the Giza Pyramids, just sitting in the haze like it was no big deal. Our guide, Ahmed, waved us over and started pointing out which pyramid belonged to who, but honestly I was still trying to take in the sheer size of them. The air smelled faintly of dust and something sweet—maybe dates?—and camels grumbled somewhere behind us. I tried to imagine what it felt like for people building these things 4,500 years ago. We wandered up close to Khufu’s pyramid (the biggest one), and Ahmed showed us a spot where you could actually see some original casing stones if you squinted.
The Sphinx looked smaller than I’d expected but somehow more real—its face kind of worn down by wind and time. There were school kids laughing nearby, snapping selfies, and an old man selling little carved cats from a battered tray. Ahmed told us a story about how the Sphinx used to be buried up to its neck in sand for centuries; I liked that image for some reason. We stopped for lunch at this local place with tile floors and bright blue walls—chicken grilled over charcoal, tahini that tasted almost smoky, bread still warm from the oven. I probably ate too much but didn’t care.
After lunch we drove over to the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM). The entrance is all glass and sunlight—Ramesses II towering above everyone—and inside it’s cool and echoey. The staircase lined with statues made me feel tiny again, like walking through a stone forest. Ahmed led us straight to the Tutankhamun galleries (he said he knew we’d want that first), and seeing that golden mask up close was honestly surreal. It’s smaller than you think but so detailed you can’t look away. There were chariots too, jewelry that looked weirdly modern—I kept thinking about how someone actually wore those things once.
I wandered off by myself near the end, just looking out a window at the pyramids across the city haze. You could hear a bit of traffic outside, but mostly it was quiet except for distant voices echoing through marble halls. I still think about that view sometimes—it felt like standing between two worlds.
