The Experience

Ever wonder if the pyramids really look as huge as in the photos? I did. The morning we set out from Cairo—our guide, Hossam, already grinning in the van—I could see them poking through the haze before we even got close. There’s this moment when you first step onto the plateau and hear nothing but wind and camel bells. I tried to picture workers dragging stones here 4,500 years ago (Hossam said it took over two million blocks for Khufu’s pyramid—he’d know, he’s an Egyptologist). My shoes filled with fine dust almost instantly. We stopped at a panoramic spot where all three pyramids lined up perfectly—my phone camera couldn’t do it justice, but I still tried.

The Sphinx was smaller than I expected but somehow more mysterious in person. Its face is weathered and kind of sad. Hossam told us about how it might represent Pharaoh Khafre—hard to imagine anyone carving that from one block of limestone. He made a joke about its missing nose (“Napoleon gets blamed for everything,” he laughed). The sun was sharp, bouncing off pale stone; I kept squinting at the details on Menkaure’s pyramid because Hossam pointed out bits of granite casing still clinging to the base. It felt strange touching something so old—almost like you shouldn’t be allowed.

After wandering through the Valley Temple (the air inside was cooler, smelled faintly of old stone), we drove to the Grand Egyptian Museum. It’s massive and modern—glass everywhere—and inside, King Tut’s treasures actually sparkle under museum lights. There were school kids running around and a couple of older men quietly arguing about hieroglyphs near a golden mask. I lost track of time just staring at all those artifacts stacked together.

The last part was my favorite: drifting on a felucca down the Nile. The city noise faded behind us; there was just water lapping against wood and some distant call to prayer echoing over Cairo. Our captain handed me mint tea (sweet, almost too sweet) while Hossam pointed out landmarks along the riverbank. I didn’t expect to feel so peaceful after such a packed day—you know how sometimes travel just slows down for a second? That was it for me.
