The Experience
You get picked up from your hotel in a private air-conditioned vehicle and driven to the Giza Plateau, where the Great Pyramid of Khufu rises ahead: the only surviving wonder of the ancient world, built over 4,500 years ago. Your guide walks you through the scale of it and the engineering that held it together, then moves to the pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure, each with its own mortuary temple and valley temple complex. The Giza Necropolis spreads across the plateau with cemeteries and the remains of a workers' village, and you have time to move at your own pace and take in the panoramic views of the entire site.
The Great Sphinx sits at the edge of the plateau, built during the reign of Khafre and later restored with temples added by New Kingdom rulers. You walk close to it and explore the Valley Temple of Khafre, a mortuary temple built from massive limestone blocks and encased in polished pink Aswan granite, where you learn about the mummification and purification rituals that took place before the pharaoh's journey to the afterlife. The temple's alabaster floors and colossal pillared halls give a sense of the scale of these complexes. If you want, you can arrange a camel ride across the desert sands. It's not included, but it's available and the driver can help you set it up.
On the drive back, you pass through Nazlet El-Samman, the village at the foot of the plateau, where you see daily Egyptian life just steps from the ancient monuments. You also pass the Marriott Mena House, a 19th-century royal hunting lodge with direct views of the Great Pyramid, and you can stop there for refreshments or lunch if the itinerary allows. The vehicle is air-conditioned throughout, bottled water is provided, and the whole day is arranged: entry, transport, timing and a guide who knows the history.
