The Experience

The first thing that hit me was how the morning light just sort of bounced off the limestone blocks — not golden exactly, more like old bone. Our guide, Hossam, met us right outside our Cairo hotel (he actually waved from across the street — I almost missed him). He had this way of talking about pharaohs like they were just neighbors who happened to build giant triangles. We drove out toward the Giza Plateau and suddenly there they were: Khufu, Khafre, Menkaure — all three pyramids just sitting there like it was no big deal. I remember rolling down the window and catching that dry, dusty smell you only get near desert stone.

We wandered around the base of the Great Pyramid first — Hossam pointed out graffiti left by workers from thousands of years ago. It’s weirdly humbling to see someone’s name scratched into rock older than most countries. The air inside was cooler and heavier when we went in (I paid extra for that), and my knees popped on those steep steps. Not everyone in our group wanted to go inside so they hung back, chatting with a tea seller who kept calling out “Habibi!” every time a tourist looked his way. I still think about that echoing silence in the burial chamber — it felt thick somehow.

Afterwards we walked over to Khafre’s pyramid and then out toward this viewpoint where you can see all six pyramids lined up against Cairo’s sprawl. There were camels everywhere (and yes, I did try riding one — my balance is questionable at best; Hossam laughed but helped me up). The city haze mixed with desert wind made everything look kind of washed out but beautiful in its own stubborn way. The Sphinx was smaller than I expected but its face had this calm stare that made me pause longer than I thought I would.
