The Experience

The first thing that hit me was how the morning light just sort of bounced off the limestone blocks — not golden exactly, more like old bone. Our guide, Hossam, met us right outside our Cairo hotel (he actually waved from across the street — I almost missed him). We drove out toward the Giza Plateau and suddenly there they were: Khufu, Khafre, Menkaure — all three pyramids just sitting there like it was no big deal. I remember rolling down the window and catching that dry, dusty smell you only get near desert stone.

We wandered around the base of the Great Pyramid first — Hossam pointed out graffiti left by workers from thousands of years ago. It’s weirdly humbling to see someone’s name scratched into rock older than most countries.
