The experience

You just sort of stand there at first, blinking against the sun, and suddenly the Giza Pyramids are real. Not in a postcard way: Khufu’s Pyramid is just sitting there, massive and weirdly calm. Our Egyptologist guide, Youssef, grinned when I asked if we could go inside. “Of course,” he said, like it was no big deal to wander into a 4,500-year-old tomb. The air inside felt thick and cool compared to the outside heat. I remember the quiet most of all. Just our footsteps and someone’s muffled laugh echoing off stone.

I didn’t expect how much ground you actually cover on this day trip from Cairo. Youssef pointed out tiny details in the carvings that I’d never have noticed (he even showed us where some graffiti from Napoleon’s soldiers was scratched in). Then he led us out to the panoramic spot for those classic camel photos: my attempt at climbing up was less than graceful. The camel handler winked at me as I wobbled. Everyone laughed, including me. Sand everywhere: on my shoes, in my mouth when the wind picked up.

The Sphinx looked smaller than I’d pictured but somehow more alive. Youssef told us old legends about its missing nose while snapping a few goofy pictures of us pretending to kiss it (I’m not showing anyone those). There was this faint smell of mint tea drifting over from a vendor nearby. I almost went for one but got distracted by a group of school kids waving at us. I still think about that moment: ancient stone lions and kids with smartphones all together under this pale blue sky.
