The Experience

“You want to try saying Khufu?” our guide, Hossam, grinned as we stepped out of the van into that dry Cairo morning. I tried — probably butchered it. The air smelled faintly of dust and something sweet from a food cart nearby. We’d barely started our private day trip from Cairo to the Giza Pyramids, but already I felt weirdly awake, like my brain knew this was one of those days you remember. Hossam waved us over to a spot where you could see all three pyramids lined up — Khufu, Khafre, Menkaure — and I just stood there for a second. It’s hard to explain; they look both bigger and smaller than you expect. The stones are rough under your hand if you touch them (I did), warm from the sun even at 9 am.

We walked around with Hossam pointing out little things — how some blocks had graffiti from ancient workers, how the Sphinx’s nose was probably lost way before Napoleon (he sounded slightly annoyed about that rumor). There were camels everywhere, their bells clinking quietly. You can ride one if you want (extra charge), but honestly I was happy just watching them sway past in that slow Egyptian way. At one point a local kid tried to sell me a tiny pyramid made of something like soapstone — I almost bought it just because he smiled so wide when I said “la shukran.”

Lunch was at this place Hossam picked — not fancy but real Egyptian food; grilled chicken with rice and something green I still don’t know the name of. Afterward we stopped at Paradise Perfume Palace (the jasmine oil is strong enough to stick in your clothes for hours) and then watched a woman at Key of Life Papyrus roll out wet strips into paper while her son painted beside her. There was a cotton shop too; I touched a scarf softer than anything back home. The whole thing felt less like shopping and more like being let into someone’s daily life for an hour or two.

I keep thinking about the quiet moment by the Sphinx — everyone else taking photos, me just staring at its face half-erased by time and wind. It wasn’t perfect or magical or whatever, but it felt honest somehow. On the drive back to Cairo, traffic horns mixing with distant calls to prayer, I realized I’d never see old stones or new cities quite the same again.
