The experience

Your guide picks you up from your Cairo or Giza hotel at 8 a.m. and drives you to the Giza Plateau in a private air-conditioned vehicle. The tour is yours alone: no group, no fixed pace dictated by other travelers. You stand in front of the three main pyramids: the Great Pyramid of Giza (built by Khufu), the Pyramid of Khafre and the Pyramid of Menkaure. Entry to the basic area is included, though interior access to any pyramid requires an additional fee arranged on-site if you choose it.

At each pyramid, your guide explains the engineering and history: Khafre's complex once held statues of the king recovered from temple wells, and Menkaure's mortuary temple yielded more royal portraits. You walk the Valley Temple, where priests performed the mummification of Pharaoh Khafre, and stand face-to-face with the Great Sphinx, the limestone guardian with a lion's body and the head of a king. This is where most travelers spend time photographing. Your guide helps position you for shots.

After four hours, you're driven back to your hotel. A bottle of water is included. If you want a camel ride around the pyramids, that's available for an extra charge and can be arranged with your guide on the day.
