The Experience

We rolled out from Cairo just after breakfast—still half-asleep, honestly—our guide Mahmoud already grinning in the front seat. The city faded fast; suddenly there was sand, then those unmistakable shapes in the haze. He pointed out how the sunlight hit Khufu’s pyramid differently than the others. I tried to take it all in but got distracted by a kid selling dates nearby, yelling something I couldn’t catch. The air smelled faintly of dust and horses.

I didn’t expect to actually go inside one of the pyramids (I picked the second one—less crowded, Mahmoud said). It was cramped and cool inside, stone walls sweating a little. My shoes squeaked on ancient floors. There was this silence that made you whisper without thinking. Outside again, we met our camel guy—his name was Hossam—and he laughed when I hesitated climbing up (“Don’t worry! Camel is friend!”). The view from up there…well, it’s hard to explain. You see Cairo on one side and endless desert on the other. I still think about that moment sometimes.

After snapping about a hundred photos (Mahmoud insisted on “one more, just for luck”), we stopped at the Sphinx—smaller than I pictured but somehow more mysterious up close. Then lunch: they took us to this Nile cruise ship where locals were celebrating something downstairs—lots of music drifting up while we ate grilled chicken and rice by the window. Not fancy-fancy, but honestly perfect after all that sand and sun.
