The Experience

We rolled out from Cairo just after breakfast—our guide, Mahmoud, was already waiting in the lobby with this quiet smile. The drive to the Giza pyramids only took about half an hour but felt quicker, maybe because I kept craning my neck for that first glimpse of the stones. When they finally appeared above the city haze, it was almost like someone had dropped them there by accident. Mahmoud started telling us stories about Cheops and Chephren—he called them “Khufu” and “Khafre,” which sounded better somehow—and I realized how little I actually knew about this place beyond what you see on postcards.

The air around the pyramids is dry and a little dusty; you can taste it if you breathe deep enough. Standing under Cheops’ pyramid, I touched one of the blocks (I know you’re not really supposed to) and it was rougher than I expected, warm from the sun. There were other groups around but it didn’t feel crowded—just lots of voices mixing together in Arabic, French, English. Mahmoud pointed out some graffiti left by 19th-century travelers; he laughed when I tried to read one in French and got stuck halfway through. We climbed up to a spot where you can see all three pyramids lined up—the view is weirdly perfect from there. I still think about that angle sometimes.

Afterwards we walked over to meet the Great Sphinx. It’s smaller than I pictured but somehow more intense up close—the face is so worn down but still watching everything. There was a camel handler nearby who waved us over; my partner got on first (with much encouragement from everyone) and then I followed. The camel ride was bumpy and awkward at first—I nearly lost my sandal—but once we got moving along the edge of the plateau it felt oddly peaceful. The breeze picked up a bit right then and brought this faint smell of mint tea from somewhere behind us.

Lunch came after all that: simple grilled chicken, rice, some flatbread—nothing fancy but honestly just what we needed after all that sun. Mahmoud told us about his own family living nearby; he said his grandfather used to work as a guard at the Sphinx before tourism changed everything here. On the way back to our hotel I felt kind of dazed, like my brain hadn’t caught up yet with what we’d seen—or maybe it just needed more time to settle in.
