The experience

Your guide meets you in your hotel lobby and drives you by private air-conditioned van to the Pyramids of Giza. The tour spends three hours on the plateau itself, starting with the Pyramid of Cheops: the greatest of the three and the only one of the seven ancient wonders still standing. From the highest point of the plateau you see all three pyramids in panoramic view: Cheops, Chephren and Mykerinus. The scale is the thing most photographs do not prepare you for.

After the pyramids you walk to the Great Sphinx, the limestone statue with a pharaoh's head and a lion's body, carved during the reign of Chephren. Then the guide takes you to the Valley Temple, which sits at the base of Chephren's pyramid and served two purposes in ancient times: the ritual purification of the king's body before burial and the mummification process itself. The temple is smaller and less crowded than the pyramids, and the guide explains what each chamber was for.

At checkout you choose which option suits your budget: the all-inclusive package with entrance fees and lunch, the car and guide only, or the car, guide and entrance fees without a meal. A camel ride around the pyramids is optional and can be added to any package. If your hotel is in an airport zone or New Cairo, pickup costs an extra $10 per person. The van returns you to your hotel at the end of the day.
