The Experience

It started with our driver waving from across a sea of taxis outside my Cairo hotel — somehow he spotted me in the crowd. I squeezed into the air-conditioned car (thank God for that) and met our guide, Hossam. He grinned and handed me a bottle of water right away, saying, “You’ll need this — Giza is thirsty work.” The city noise faded as we crossed the Nile, and I caught my first glimpse of the Giza Pyramids rising out of this soft brown haze.
