The experience

Five hours covers the three pyramids and the Sphinx with an expert Egyptologist guide who walks you through the architecture and history of each. You start at the Great Sphinx standing at the foot of the plateau. The guide explains how it is believed to represent King Chephren, with a lion's body and a human head. From there you move to the Pyramid of Khafre, the middle pyramid just below the Great Pyramid of Giza in scale, then spend time at the Great Pyramid itself, where you can choose to enter inside for an additional cost or take a camel ride across the plateau if you prefer.

The tour ends at the Giza Plateau, where you stand with all three pyramids as your backdrop for photographs. On the drive down the plateau you pass the Sphinx again, and the itinerary includes a stop at a papyrus institute to watch a demonstration of how ancient Egyptians made papyrus. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, along with entrance fees, bottled water and an air-conditioned coach.

Moderate fitness is needed for walking the plateau and moving between sites. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Interior pyramid entry and camel rides are optional and cost extra.
