The experience
The driver was ten minutes late picking us up, which turned out to be perfect timing. We hit the Giza Plateau just as the early tour buses were leaving. We started at the Great Pyramid of Cheops, the last surviving Wonder of the Ancient World, and honestly, no photo prepares you for how massive it actually is when you're standing in front of it. You can see all three pyramids aligned, the desert stretching out, and it's the one shot that actually captures why people built these things in the first place. If you want, you can add a camel ride or ATV quad bike from there, but we just stood and looked for a while.
The Great Sphinx came next, and the "kissing the Sphinx" photo op is exactly as awkward and worth it as it sounds. Our guide explained the theories about its age and purpose, which made standing in front of that lion's head feel less like a tourist checkbox and more like actually being in the presence of something that's been watching the desert for four thousand years. The whole thing (three pyramids, the Sphinx, the viewpoint) took about five hours. We were back at the hotel by early afternoon, which meant we could either rest or actually explore Cairo proper without feeling rushed. If you add the Grand Egyptian Museum or a traditional lunch, you're looking at a full day, but the core tour is genuinely half-day pacing.
One thing to know: entrance tickets to the pyramids themselves aren't included in the base price, which feels like it should be, but it actually gives you flexibility. You pay separately at the gate, and if you decide you want to skip inside one of them or just do the exterior views, you're not locked into a package. The vehicle is air-conditioned, water's on board, and pickup happens from your Cairo or Giza hotel or straight from the airport if you're on a layover. If you're thinking about adding an Egyptologist guide, do it: the difference between standing in front of these things and actually understanding what you're looking at is substantial.
