The Experience

Most people stand outside the Great Pyramid and wonder what's in there. You're going inside, and you're doing it when the site is still empty. Your Egyptologist picks you up from your hotel in the early morning, before the pyramids area opens to regular visitors, and drives you through Cairo's waking streets in a private air-conditioned car. When you arrive at Giza, there's almost no one there yet—just you, your guide, and 4,500 years of stone.

The actual walk through the Great Pyramid takes you up the ascending passageway toward the King's Chamber, a red granite room near the top where you can stand inside a sarcophagus for a moment if you want to. On the way up, you pass through the Grand Gallery—a narrow, sloped passage that's called the mysterious passage for reasons that become obvious when you're standing in it. Your guide explains what you're seeing: the engineering, the purpose of each chamber, why the Egyptians built it this way. Then you descend into the subterranean chamber at the base, carved straight out of bedrock, with a small passageway on the south wall that leads nowhere. You also visit the Queen's Chamber. If the Great Pyramid is closed for restoration, you'll enter either the Pyramid of Khafra or Menkaure instead, depending on what's available that day.

The whole Giza private tour includes a panoramic view of all three pyramids from outside, and if you book the extended option, you'll also see the Sphinx and the Valley Temple from inside. Everything is covered—the special permission from the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities, the professional guide, the car, the entry fees.
