The experience

Your guide picks you up from your hotel and drives you across Cairo to the Giza Plateau, where the tour moves through the three main pyramids: Khufu's (the only surviving ancient wonder), Khafre's (the second-highest, with its valley temple still intact), and Menkaure's (the smallest, with granite casing stones still visible on its lower section, quarried over 1,000 kilometers away in Aswan). The Egyptologist walks you through the complex of each, explaining the construction and the pharaohs they were built for, and you'll have time to photograph from multiple angles.

After the pyramids, you stop at a panoramic viewpoint overlooking all six pyramids and the city of Giza for about 30 minutes. This is where the camel ride happens if you want it. Then you move to the Great Sphinx, the limestone guardian with a lion's body and the head of King Khafre, where your guide (who is also trained as a photographer) helps you frame shots. The same entrance ticket covers both the pyramids and the Sphinx, so there's no separate line.

The tour runs 4 to 8 hours depending on which option you pick and whether you add interior access to any of the pyramids: that requires a separate ticket, which your guide can arrange. An all-inclusive option handles all the details and includes a traditional Egyptian lunch; the classic private tour gives you the guide and car with entrance fees covered; or you can book car and guide only and decide on the spot which sites to enter and what extras to add. How long does the camel ride last?

The camel ride is part of the 30-minute stop at the panoramic viewpoint overlooking the plateau. It's included in the tour, though you're not obligated to ride if you prefer to photograph or rest instead.
