The Experience
"You want to try riding the camel yourself?" our guide, Hossam, grinned at me, eyebrow raised. I laughed—half nervous, half excited—and before I knew it, I was perched up high, my hands gripping the rough saddle as the camel lurched forward. The sun was already strong even though it was still morning, and the air had that dry clarity you only get in Egypt. We’d just arrived from Cairo (the drive wasn’t long but felt like crossing into another world), and suddenly there they were: the Giza Pyramids, bigger and somehow quieter than I’d pictured.
I kept staring at Khufu’s pyramid—Hossam called it “Cheops” too—and he explained how each block was hauled here by hand. There was this moment when we stood close enough to touch one of those ancient stones; it felt cool and oddly smooth under my palm. Kids were darting between tour groups while vendors tried to sell little scarab trinkets (I caved and bought one). The Sphinx looked both fierce and tired—someone nearby joked she needs a nap after all these centuries. I didn’t expect to feel so small here. In a good way.
Lunch came just in time—falafel that tasted greener than any I’ve had back home, with salads full of fresh herbs. The restaurant buzzed with chatter in Arabic and laughter from a table of locals celebrating something (never did find out what). Afterward we visited Queen Henutsen’s pyramid; Hossam said most people skip it, but he liked its quietness. It felt almost private there, away from the crowds—just us and the sandy wind for a minute or two.
We finished with an optional stop at a papyrus shop—smelled faintly sweet inside—and watched a woman show how they roll the reeds into paper. My attempt looked more like a soggy bookmark but she smiled anyway. The day ended without ceremony; just tired feet and dust on my shoes. But sometimes when things go quiet at home, I remember that hush near Queen Henutsen’s pyramid and wonder what stories are still buried out there.
