Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Explore Giza Pyramids and Great Sphinx

  • Visit Giza Plateau pyramids
  • Explore Great Pyramid of King Cheops
  • See the Great Sphinx statue

The first thing I noticed stepping out near the Giza Plateau was the dry, chalky smell—like old stone baking under sun. Our Egyptologist, Hany, waved us over with a grin that made me feel like we’d known him for ages. He pointed at Cheops’ pyramid and said something about it being older than most legends. I remember squinting up at those blocks, thinking about how many hands had touched them before mine. There were school kids laughing nearby, their uniforms bright against all that sand.

I didn’t expect to actually go inside a pyramid—Ehtepheres I—until Hany handed us our tickets. The air inside felt heavy, almost damp compared to outside. My fingers brushed over rough limestone as we ducked through the passageways (I’m not tall but still managed to bump my head). It smelled like minerals and dust and maybe a little bit of time itself, if that makes sense. Later we visited Meresankh III’s tomb; her painted walls looked faded but somehow still alive. I caught myself whispering without meaning to.

The camel ride was… well, bumpy is an understatement. Our guide joked that my camel liked to take his time—“he’s on Egyptian time,” he said—and honestly I didn’t mind because the view from the panoramic spot was unreal. You could see all three pyramids lined up, with Cairo’s edge just hazy in the distance. Lunch came after: open buffet (I went back twice for ful medames), cold soda sweating in my hand, sand sticking to my shoes. Someone asked Hany if he ever got tired of this place and he just shook his head, smiling like he knew something we didn’t.
