The Experience

Hands pressed against warm stone—my first real moment at the Giza Pyramids. Our guide, Mahmoud, just grinned as I tried to guess how many blocks it took to build Khufu’s pyramid (I was wildly off). The air smelled dusty but sweet, like old paper and sun-baked earth. Camels shuffled past us, bells clinking. It was louder than I expected, honestly—kids laughing, vendors calling out “Welcome!” in every language they could muster. We’d started from our Cairo hotel that morning; I barely remember breakfast because I was too nervous about finally seeing this place for myself.

Standing in front of the Great Sphinx felt stranger than I thought it would. There’s a kind of hush there—even with all the people around. Mahmoud told us about lost noses and ancient riddles (he has a favorite joke about tourists asking if there’s a door inside the Sphinx—there isn’t). The wind picked up sand and stung my ankles while I stared at that giant face. I still think about its expression sometimes—calm but also sort of tired? Or maybe that was just me after walking around in the sun for hours.

The Grand Egyptian Museum is enormous—like you could get lost if you wandered off (don’t worry, Mahmoud kept an eye on us). The entrance hall is almost overwhelming: Ramesses II towering over everyone, sunlight slanting through glass so bright it made my eyes water. We saw Tutankhamun’s mask up close—so much gold it didn’t seem real—and tiny things too: delicate jewelry, wooden boats. There’s something about seeing all these pieces together that makes history feel less distant. Lunch was simple but good—I remember cold water more than anything else because by then we were parched. On the drive back to Cairo, we all got quiet for a bit; maybe just tired or maybe letting it all sink in.
