The Experience

We nearly missed our pickup because I couldn’t find my sunglasses—classic. Our guide, Ahmed, just laughed and said the sun would “wake us up faster than coffee.” He was right. The drive from central Cairo to Giza wasn’t long, maybe half an hour, but it felt like entering another world. There’s this moment when the Great Pyramid suddenly appears through the car window—bigger than I’d pictured, somehow rougher around the edges. Camels were grumbling nearby, and a couple of kids tried to sell us postcards. I bought one; still haven’t sent it.

Standing in front of the Sphinx felt stranger than I expected. Maybe it was the sound of distant traffic mixed with birds circling above or just how small we seemed compared to all that stone. Ahmed told us about Khufu and Chephren like he’d met them himself (he joked he was “older than the pyramids”—his words). We did a short camel ride; honestly, I was more wobbly than majestic but managed not to fall off. The sand gets everywhere—shoes, pockets, even my camera bag.

Lunch was in a noisy food court where everyone seemed to be shouting over each other but somehow it worked. The falafel had this herby smell that stuck to my fingers for hours. Afterward, we drove into Old Cairo for Coptic sites—the Hanging Church especially. It’s quieter there; cool stone underfoot and little flickers of candlelight everywhere. At St. Sergius Church, Ahmed pointed out the crypt where tradition says Mary and Joseph hid with Jesus. I didn’t expect to feel much but there was this hush that made me stop talking for once.

The last stop was the Mosque of Muhammad Ali inside the Citadel—so much light bouncing off alabaster walls you almost have to squint. A group of local schoolkids waved at us and tried out their English (“Welcome! Where you from?”). Walking back down from the citadel as sunset started—I don’t know, Cairo looked softer somehow. Still thinking about that view.
