The experience

You're met at Cairo airport arrivals by a guide holding a sign with your name, then driven by private vehicle to Giza. On the way, the guide gives you background on ancient Egypt: why the pyramids were built, how the construction worked, and the timeline. This context makes the monuments themselves make sense when you arrive.

At Giza, you start with the Great Pyramid, built by King Cheops (Khufu), the largest of the three. Next is the Pyramid of Khafre, the middle pyramid, where you can see the full complex including the burial chambers and the mortuary temple connected by a causeway to the valley temple where the king's body was mummified. The guide takes you to a panoramic viewpoint where all three pyramids appear in a single frame: the spot locals use for photos with the monuments as backdrop. The guide helps you frame shots here.

You finish at the Great Sphinx, the oldest and largest sphinx in Egypt, with a lion's body and a human head carved as a portrait of Khafre. It sits near the valley temple. After your visit, you're driven back to the airport. The tour runs any time between 7 am and 1 pm, so you can time it around your flight. English is free. Spanish, Italian, French, German, Russian and Chinese are available for an extra charge. Camel rides and entry inside the pyramids can be arranged for an additional fee.
