The Experience

The first thing I remember is the heat shimmering off the stone as we stepped out of the car near the Great Pyramid of Giza. Our guide, Hossam, handed me a bottle of water before I could even ask—he just grinned and said, “You’ll need it.” The air was dry and full of dust that somehow smelled faintly sweet, like old paper or maybe dates. I’d seen photos all my life but walking right up to Khufu’s pyramid felt unreal—like standing next to a mountain someone built by hand. Hossam pointed out marks in the limestone where workers had dragged blocks thousands of years ago. I tried to imagine their lives but honestly, my mind just kept going blank from the sheer size.

We wandered between Chephren and Mykerinos too, each pyramid with its own strange silence. There were camels lounging nearby (one snorted at me), and kids selling postcards in every language you can think of. Hossam told us about Khafre’s valley temple—most of it is buried now under a village—and how archaeologists are still finding things nobody expected. He laughed when I asked if he ever got tired of this place. “Never,” he said, “but my feet do.” That made me laugh too. It’s weird how quickly you start feeling small here. At one point I touched the stone—cooler than I thought—and tried to picture all those centuries stacked up behind it.

The Sphinx was next, half-shadowed in the morning light, its face both stern and kind (I didn’t expect that). Hossam explained how it was carved for King Khafre and pointed out where bits had been restored or patched up over time. There were birds nesting in cracks above its paws; one swooped down so close I flinched and nearly dropped my camera. We took photos but mostly just stood there staring for a while because what else do you do? Afterward we stopped for lunch at a local spot—flatbread still warm from the oven, smoky grilled chicken, tahini that tasted almost lemony. I still think about that bread sometimes.
