The Experience

“You know, Khufu was just a man like us,” our guide Ahmed said, tapping his chest and grinning as we stepped out onto the Giza Plateau. I’d expected to feel small next to the Great Pyramid, but honestly, it was more like being swallowed up by time. The air was already warm—dusty sweet, almost metallic—and there were schoolkids laughing somewhere behind us. Ahmed had this way of telling stories that made you forget about the crowds or your camera for a minute. He pointed out chisel marks on one of the blocks and shrugged: “Four thousand years and still here.” I tried to imagine building anything that would last that long. My shoes filled with sand in about ten seconds flat.

We wandered between Khafre and Menkaure too, pausing so Ahmed could show us how each pyramid was slightly different—he even let us try saying their names in Arabic (I won’t embarrass myself by repeating my attempt). The view from up there is something I still think about: all three pyramids lined up against this pale blue sky, Cairo’s chaos humming far off in the haze. It didn’t feel real at all.

The Sphinx felt quieter than I expected. Maybe it was just our timing; maybe it’s always like that in person. Ahmed told us a few theories about its missing nose (none of them official), but mostly we just stood there watching its shadow stretch across the sand. Afterward, our driver whisked us away from the city noise toward the riverbank for our Nile felucca ride. The boat barely made a sound as we pushed off—the only thing louder than the water was someone singing softly on another boat nearby. The sun started dipping low and everything turned gold for a while. I didn’t want to leave yet, but eventually we drifted back to shore.
