The experience
The tour starts with pickup and heads toward A Boong Waterfall on smooth roads that open into views of the surrounding valleys. You swim in the waterfall's pool, then ride Thai An Pass: a 10-kilometer stretch carved high above cliffs hundreds of meters deep. The pass connects two communes and sits as a serious rival to Ma Pi Leng itself. That first night you stay in a homestay in Du Gia, a highland commune 70 kilometers from Ha Giang City, where locals still live in small houses ringed by gardens and rice fields. Evening brings games, local music, and time with the family.
Day two takes you through Meo Vac for lunch, then to Ma Pi Leng Pass and the White Cliff skywalks. You trek through white limestone formations and villages on foot, then ride back to Dong Van for the second homestay night. Day three loops north to Lung Cu Flag Tower: standing at 1,470 meters on Dragon Mountain, the northernmost point of Vietnam, with 387 steps leading to views across the whole region. You visit Lô Lô Chải Village at its base, home to one of Vietnam's smallest ethnic groups, then move through Sa Phin's rocky "Moon Surface" landscape and the Hmong Royal Palace, a 20th-century estate blending Chinese, French, and Hmong styles. The Yên Minh Pine Forest closes the day before your third homestay. On the final morning you ride through Lung Khuy Cave, Lung Tam Weaving Village where Hmong artisans work indigo-dyed hemp by hand, Heaven Gate at 1,500 meters, the Twin Mountains, and Dốc Thẩm Mã pass before arriving back in Ha Giang by 5pm.
An English-speaking guide travels with you throughout. You get 1.5 liters of water daily and meals cooked by your homestay families. The tour handles pickup from Ha Giang and arranges all accommodation. Dietary restrictions like vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free can be noted at booking. You'll need a valid motorbike license and should be comfortable riding on mountain roads with steep grades and tight switchbacks.

Is this one for you?Four days means you cover the full Ha Giang Loop and its northern reaches without rushing, but you return to Ha Giang by evening on day four: enough time to catch an onward bus or flight the same day if needed. The self-ride format suits riders comfortable navigating steep mountain passes and cliff-edge roads on their own. If you prefer someone else to handle the bike, look for a guided tour where the driver controls the motorbike.

Top questions
Can I ride the motorbike if I've never ridden before?
You need a valid motorbike license to ride. The tour is self-guided, meaning you control the bike yourself on all roads, including steep mountain passes with cliff edges. If you don't have a license or experience, this tour is not the right fit.
What happens at Ma Pi Leng Pass?
Ma Pi Leng is one of Ha Giang's most famous passes, carved into dramatic karst terrain above the Nho Que River far below. You ride through it yourself, then trek the White Cliff skywalks on foot through white limestone formations and local villages before your guide picks you up to ride back to Dong Van.
Where do I sleep each night?
You stay in local homestays: Du Gia on night one, Dong Van on night two, and Yên Minh Pine Forest area on night three. Families cook dinner and breakfast for you, and evenings include games and time with the household. On the fourth day you return to Ha Giang by 5pm.
What's included in the price?
The tour includes pickup from Ha Giang, an English-speaking guide for all four days, three nights in homestays with meals, and 1.5 liters of water daily. You pay separately for personal expenses, drinks beyond water, and any activities not listed in the itinerary.
Is there a minimum age?
Yes, the minimum age is 16 years old. The tour is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnant travelers, or those with poor cardiovascular health, though it suits all fitness levels otherwise.
What if I don't want to ride the whole way?
This is a self-ride tour, so you control the motorbike on all roads. If you prefer not to ride certain sections, you would need to arrange alternative transport, which the tour does not provide. The guide rides separately and meets you at stops and homestays.
