The Experience

Your guide shows up ten minutes late on the first morning—traffic in Ha Giang City—and you're already wondering if you should've booked the safer option, the bus tour, the thing your hotel receptionist kept mentioning. Then you're on the bike, climbing toward Bac Sum Pass, and the doubt just evaporates. The road narrows, the valley opens below you, and you realize why people come back to the Ha Giang Loop again and again. It's not one thing—it's the combination. You're riding a Japanese motorcycle through limestone mountains that look like they were drawn by someone who'd never seen a real landscape before. The air gets thinner. The villages get smaller. By the time you reach Yen Minh on the first night, you've covered maybe 150 kilometers, but it feels like you've crossed into somewhere else entirely.

The homestays are where the loop stops being a motorbike tour and becomes something closer to an actual exchange. You sleep in a H'mong family's house on night one, in a Tay village on night three—not in a guesthouse with a "local flavor" theme, but in the actual place where people live. Your host cooks with vegetables from the garden and a chicken that was alive that morning. There's no menu, no choice, and that's the point. You sit by the fire in the evening, and someone teaches you three words in their language that you'll forget by morning. The second day is shorter on purpose—they want you at Ma Pi Leng Pass, the scenic centerpiece, with time to actually stand there and look at it instead of rushing through. The "Road of Happiness" winds along the cliff face, and the drop is real enough that you grip the seat a little tighter.

If you're riding yourself, the guide stays close—minor repairs, gas, navigation, all handled. If you'd rather not grip the handlebars for four days straight, you can hire a driver for the bike or take a car instead, though that costs extra and you arrange it separately. Either way, the itinerary is the same: Bac Sum Pass and the "Single Tree" viewpoint on day one, Dong Van Old Quarter and the Pao's House on day two, Tu San Canyon and a boat ride on the Nho Que River on day three, then the drive back to Ha Giang City by 4 p.m. on day four so you can catch the bus back to Hanoi. The tour runs three days and two nights or four days and three nights depending on what you book. All meals are included—breakfast, lunch, dinner—and they're Vietnamese food cooked in the villages, not adapted for tourists. Entrance fees, permits, water during the day, the helmet and protective gear, fuel: it's all in the price.

Groups stay small, which means you're not waiting for anyone and no one's waiting for you. The guide speaks English. Your luggage gets stored safely in Ha Giang City while you ride, and they give you bungee cords and a plastic cover so your bag doesn't slide off the back. You'll want to book this soon if you're thinking about it—the Ha Giang Loop fills up, especially in the cooler months, and the homestays have limited beds. The tour departs from Hanoi with round-trip transport included, so you don't have to figure out how to get to Ha Giang on your own.

What’s included

Your tour includes an English-speaking guide, a quality Japanese motorcycle (or car with driver, at extra cost), all safety equipment and rain gear, all fuel, three nights of accommodation in ethnic minority homestays, all meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner), entrance fees and permits for all attractions, drinking water and soft drinks during lunch, round-trip transfer between Hanoi and Ha Giang, free luggage storage in Ha Giang City, and bungee cords and a plastic cover for your bags. A free dorm bed is available if you arrive on a night bus before the tour starts.

Top questions

Can I ride the motorbike myself if I've never ridden before?

Yes. The guide stays with you, handles navigation and repairs, and the roads, while winding, are well-maintained. You can also hire a driver for the bike or take a car with driver instead.

What's included in the meals?

Breakfast, lunch and dinner every day. The homestay families cook with fresh vegetables from their gardens and local ingredients. It's authentic Vietnamese food, not restaurant food.

What happens if it rains?

Rain gear is included. The roads are well-built and the tour runs year-round, though weather varies by season.

Is there a 3-day or 4-day option?

Yes, both. The 3-day version is 2 nights; the 4-day is 3 nights. The itinerary is the same, just spread differently.

What if I don't want to ride?

You can hire a driver for the motorcycle or take a car with a driver instead, at an additional cost arranged separately.

Are the homestays comfortable?

They're basic village homes, not hotels. You get a bed, a warm meal and a genuine experience with the family. Comfort is simple but genuine.

Is the tour suitable for beginners?

It's suitable for all fitness levels according to the operator, though it's not recommended for people with spinal injuries, pregnancy or poor cardiovascular health. Discuss any concerns with the operator.

What time do I return to Hanoi?

You reach Ha Giang City by 4 p.m. on the final day, in time to catch the bus back to Hanoi. The round-trip transfer from Hanoi is included.
