The first thing that hit me was the smell of motor oil mixing with morning mist right outside Lila Hostel in Ha Giang City. Our guide—Tuan, who grinned like he’d done this a thousand times (he probably has)—handed me a helmet and asked if I’d slept well. I hadn’t really, nerves and excitement both, but as soon as we set off toward Bac Sum Pass all that faded behind the hum of the bike. The road twisted so much it felt like riding on the back of some giant stone snake. At one point Tuan pointed out a waterfall hidden behind thick green leaves—I almost missed it because I was too busy staring at the terraced fields sliding down the hills.

Lunch in Quan Ba was simple—rice, pork, something pickled that I still can’t name—but it tasted better than anything back home. We stopped at Nam Dam village where an old woman showed us how she stamped earth to build her house; her hands were stained blue from indigo dye. Later in Lung Tam, I tried weaving linen with the Hmong women and completely tangled my threads. They laughed gently but didn’t make me feel silly. Karaoke after dinner in Yen Minh was wild—one uncle sang a love song so off-key even his grandkids covered their ears.

The second day on the Ha Giang Loop took us past jagged mountains and up to the Vietnam-China border. There’s something strange about standing at the edge of your own country looking out over endless green valleys—makes you feel tiny and lucky at once. We wandered through Dong Van ancient town just before dusk; kids played chase around us while our guide explained why all the roofs looked so heavy (keeps out winter winds). The air smelled faintly of woodsmoke and fried dough from a street cart.

I’m not sure what stuck with me most—the Ma Pi Leng Pass with its cliffs dropping straight into turquoise water below or watching a local kid climb a bamboo tree faster than I could say “noodle soup.” We cooled off in Du Gia waterfall on our last morning, sun on our backs and feet numb from cold river stones. The ride back into Ha Giang City felt quieter somehow—like everyone was thinking about what they’d just seen. Even now when I hear an engine start up early in the morning, part of me is right back there on those mountain roads.
