The Experience

You're on the road at 8 am on day one, leaving Ha Giang city after breakfast and heading 50 km toward Quan Ba district. The winding climb into the Dong Van Karst Plateau Global Geopark starts almost immediately, and your first real stop is Heaven's Gate—the viewpoint where the Twin Mountains frame Tam Son town below, rice fields spreading out in every direction. It's the kind of place where you stop for coffee and realize you're actually doing this. After lunch in Tam Son, there's a 4 km hike to Lung Khuy Cave, then a visit to Lung Tam Weaving Village where H'mong women still work looms by hand. By evening you're at the homestay in Can Ty, and the last thing you do before dinner is walk 2 km to see the Lonely Tree—a 250-year-old oak standing alone in an open field.

Day two is the long one. You climb Tham Ma Pass at 1,500 meters, then ride 20 km to Vua Meo Mansion, the century-old H'mong King Palace that cost over 150 billion VND to build and is still standing with its history intact. Your guide will tell you stories about the royal family and the ethnic group that built it. Then comes Lung Cu Commune and the Lung Cu Flag Tower—the northernmost point of Vietnam, 400 steps up, with the Chinese border visible just 3 km away. Lunch is in Dong Van Town, and after that you descend to the Nho Que River for a 50-minute boat tour through the canyon below Ma Pi Leng Pass, one of the most stunning mountain passes in Vietnam. You sleep at the ecolodge in Meo Vac that night, with traditional dinner and live music.

The final day loops back through remote H'mong villages with their stone gates, then climbs Sa Ly Pass with its M-shaped curves and green fields. You stop in Duong Thuong Commune in Yen Minh District—a place where cornfields stretch out and the pace of life hasn't changed much—then lunch at Can Ty Village before the 65 km ride back to Ha Giang city. You're done by 4:30 pm at the QT guesthouse. The whole Ha Giang Loop motorbike tour is three long days, no lazy mornings, but you complete the full circuit and see the attractions that make the region worth the ride.
