The Experience

The loop starts from Ha Giang City with breakfast, then climbs through Quan Ba Heaven Gate and the Bac Sum Slope toward Dong Van. Along the way you stop at Tham Ma Pass, Pho Cao village, and Sung La valley to visit Lung Cam cultural village, where H'Mong families still live in traditional compounds. By late afternoon you reach the Vuong family mansion—a three-story structure blending H'Mong, French and Chinese architecture—and check into a private room at a local homestay in Dong Van Old Town. Dinner is included, and the evening is yours to walk the night market and sample street food.

Day two departs at 8:30 am for Ma Pi Leng Pass, the centerpiece of the loop. You stop at the monument, panorama viewpoint, and Death Cliff—a limestone edge overlooking the Nho Que River canyon below. The pass cuts through the Dong Van Karst Plateau, a UNESCO Geopark of jagged peaks and narrow switchbacks. After exploring the pass, you descend to the river for a boat ride through Tu San canyon, then lunch in Meo Vac town. The return to Ha Giang City takes the afternoon, with arrival by 5:30 pm.

Your motorbike is a 110cc, fueled for the full route, and your driver is trained specifically for mountain roads. The guide speaks English and knows the villages, families and history along the way. All entrance tickets and permits are arranged in advance, so you ride without stopping to negotiate access. Meals are Vietnamese local food prepared at homestays and roadside stops—breakfast before departure, lunch at a town stop, and dinner at your overnight accommodation.
