The experience
The Ha Giang Loop is a 3-day mountain circuit that starts and ends in Ha Giang City, reached by car from Hanoi. Your driver navigates the winding passes (Bac Sum, Tham Ma, the Nine Sloping Pass), while you watch the landscape shift from terraced rice fields to limestone cliffs. The route is built around three signature stops: Quan Ba Heaven's Gate, a viewpoint between twin mountains; Lung Cu Flag Tower, marking Vietnam's northernmost point with panoramic views across the border; and Ma Pi Leng Pass, one of the country's most dramatic mountain roads. The itinerary also includes Lung Tam Village, where you can watch traditional weavers at work, and Dong Van Town, known for its weekend market and colonial-era architecture.
Day two takes you through Ma Pi Leng Pass and down to the Nho Que River, where a boat carries you through Tu San Canyon: one of Southeast Asia's deepest gorges, with sheer cliffs rising from turquoise water. You'll stop in Meo Vac to explore the local market and ethnic minority crafts, then drive the M-shaped road and visit Mau Due and Du Gia Village, both set among rice terraces and H'mong communities. On the final day, you see Du Gia Waterfall, stop at Lung Ho and Duong Thuong viewpoints, and pass through Little Ma Pi Leng Canyon before returning to Ha Giang City. Overnight stays are in homestays (one in Dong Van, one in Du Gia) giving you time to rest between driving days and eat with local families.
The vehicle is air-conditioned and seats your group. The guide speaks English or Vietnamese and handles all navigation. Fuel and parking are covered. You can book the full package, which includes meals, or the self-transport option, where you arrange and pay for your own food. Children from age 13 are welcome. The flexible itinerary means you set the pace at each stop. There's no rush schedule, and your driver waits while you photograph, explore villages or rest.

What is Lung Cu Flag Tower and why is it on this tour?
Lung Cu Flag Tower marks Vietnam's northernmost point and stands as a national symbol. It sits at the end of day one and offers panoramic views across the surrounding mountains and rice terraces, making it both a cultural landmark and a major photo stop on the loop.

What happens during the boat trip through Tu San Canyon?
On day two, you take a boat through Tu San Canyon, one of Southeast Asia's deepest gorges, floating along the Nho Que River with sheer limestone cliffs rising on both sides. The trip is peaceful and gives you a different perspective on the landscape than the mountain roads.
Are the mountain passes safe to drive, and do I need any special skills?
The passes (Bac Sum, Tham Ma, Ma Pi Leng) have winding roads but your driver is experienced in navigating them. You don't need any special skills. You sit in the air-conditioned vehicle while the driver handles the curves and steep sections.

Both homestays offer comfortable, basic accommodations and a chance to stay with local families. They provide authentic experiences and home-cooked meals if you book the full package, though amenities are simpler than a hotel.
