The Experience
The loop starts in Ha Giang city and climbs toward Quan Ba Heaven Gate, where the altitude hits 1,500 meters and the Dong Van valley spreads below in terraced rice fields and scattered houses. The gate sits at the official entrance to Vietnam's first UNESCO Global Geopark, a 2,345-square-kilometer plateau of limestone rock that covers four northern districts. From there, the route drops into Dong Van town for the first night in a homestay set among rice fields, with a private room and shared bathroom outside.
Day two is the pass itself—Ma Pi Leng, roughly 20 kilometers of road that climbs to 1,500 meters and earns its place among Vietnam's top four most dangerous passes. The name translates from H'mong as "the bridge of a horse's nose," a shape the road actually follows as it hugs the mountainside near the China border. You ride it on your own motorbike with the guide leading; a second night lands in a Hmong homestay overlooking Du Gia village. The final day covers 80 kilometers back through Thuan Hoa village and into Ha Giang city, passing through Saturday markets if you time it right and walking past locals working the rice fields.
The motorbike is yours to ride for all three days, with fuel and a manual included. Your guide is a local from one of Ha Giang's ethnic minorities, speaks English, and has driven these roads many times. You get a free dorm bed when you arrive in Ha Giang before the tour starts, bottled water throughout, and entry to both Quan Ba Heaven Gate and Ma Pi Leng Pass built into the price.

Can I ride a motorcycle if I've never done it before on a trip like this?
The tour requires you to ride your own motorbike across mountain passes, including the 20-kilometer Ma Pi Leng Pass at 1,500 meters. The operator notes that riders should have at least a moderate level of physical fitness, and the pass is recognized as one of Vietnam's most dangerous roads. This is not a beginner-friendly introduction to riding.
What is Quan Ba Heaven Gate and why does it matter on this route?
Quan Ba Heaven Gate sits at 1,500 meters above sea level and marks the official entrance to the Dong Van UNESCO Global Geopark, Vietnam's first. From the top, you can see across the Quan Ba valley with its rice terraces and ethnic minority houses, and it is the first stop on day one of the loop.
What is Ma Pi Leng Pass and how difficult is it to ride?
Ma Pi Leng Pass is a 20-kilometer mountain road connecting Dong Van and Meo Vac, sitting at approximately 1,500 meters altitude near the Vietnam-China border. It ranks among Vietnam's top four most dangerous passes and is compared to the Great Wall of China for its dramatic shape. You ride it yourself on day two of the tour.
Where do I sleep on this tour?
You stay in homestays both nights: the first in a private room with shared bathroom in a homestay set among rice fields in Dong Van town, and the second in a Hmong family's homestay overlooking Du Gia village. Both are included in the tour price.
What happens on the last day of the tour?
Day three is an 80-kilometer ride from Du Gia village through Thuan Hoa village and back to Ha Giang city. The route passes through local rice fields where you can see residents at work, and if you time the tour for a Saturday, you'll pass through a market where the region's ethnic minorities gather.
Do I need a motorcycle license to do this tour?
The tour includes "Easy Rider with license," meaning the guide has the proper licensing and experience. You ride your own motorbike, so you should be a confident rider comfortable on mountain roads; the operator notes this is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or pregnancy.
