The experience
You start at 8:30 am at Green Hill Hostel in Ha Giang, where your driver-guide briefs you on safety and the route ahead. The first day covers 150km of switchbacks and mountain scenery to Dong Van: you stop at Quan Ba (Heaven's Gate) for coffee overlooking a valley, visit a traditional Hmong house and village where the film House of Pao was shot, and see the Kings Palace before settling into a local homestay for the night.
Day two takes you north to Lung Cu Flag Tower, Vietnam's northernmost point, then down through Ma Pi Leng Pass: one of the loop's most dramatic stretches. You board a boat that winds between massive cliff faces along the Nho Que River, then ride into Du Gia through sloping mountains and deep valleys. In the evening you swim and cool off at a nearby waterfall before another night in a homestay.
The return journey on day three follows a road you haven't traveled yet, with stops at viewpoints and rest breaks as the landscape shifts. You ride back to Ha Giang with time to photograph and absorb the changing terrain. Your guide speaks English or Vietnamese, and you can request dietary or accommodation adjustments before the tour starts. If you prefer to ride your own motorbike instead of sharing one with the driver, the operator offers a discounted rate.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Vietnamese.
What is Lung Cu Flag Tower and why do people visit it on this tour?
Lung Cu Flag Tower marks Vietnam's northernmost point and sits at the border with China. The ride to reach it crosses some of the Ha Giang Loop's most remote terrain, and the tower itself is a landmark many travelers want to stand at and photograph.
Can I choose a private room or do I have to stay in a dorm on this tour?
You choose at checkout: private room or dorm bed in the local homestays on nights one and two. Either way, accommodation is included in the tour price.
What happens on the boat tour along the Nho Que River?
On day two, after descending Ma Pi Leng Pass, you board a boat that travels between the massive cliff faces of the river gorge. The boat ride is part of the route down to Du Gia and gives you a different view of the landscape you've been riding through.
Do I need to ride a motorbike myself, or does the driver handle it?
You ride as a passenger on a shared motorbike with your driver-guide, who handles all the riding. If you hold a valid license and want to ride your own motorbike, the operator offers a discounted price for that option.
What's included in the tour price and what do I need to pay for separately?
All meals, accommodation, the motorbike and fuel, safety helmet and rain gear, entrance fees, permits and transportation are included. Tea and coffee are not included, so budget for those if you want them during stops.
Is this tour physically demanding, and do I need to be fit to do it?
The tour is suitable for all fitness levels. It is not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health because of the high altitude and winding mountain roads, but otherwise the pace is manageable. You're riding as a passenger, not exerting yourself.
