4-day Ha Giang Loop motorcycle tour: Small group with Easy Rider
Ride four mountain passes and stay in villages most tourists skip
A 4-day Ha Giang Loop motorcycle tour in northern Vietnam with a live English-speaking guide, small groups of up to six riders, and private homestay accommodation. You ride through Quan Ba Heaven Gate, Bac Sum Pass and Ma Pi Leng Pass, visit H'Mong and Dao ethnic villages, swim in the Nho Que River, and take a boat into Hem Tu San canyon. Groups stay small by design so the pace stays manageable and the guide can stop whenever the road or a village warrants it.

The experience
The loop covers four days on a motorcycle with an Easy Rider guide who briefs the route each morning and explains the history and stories of each pass and village as you ride. Day one takes you from Ha Giang through Quan Ba Heaven Gate and the winding Bac Sum Pass to Dong Van, a mountain town near the China border. Day two climbs Tham Ma Pass, crosses into Pho Bang (a quiet trading post that has kept its highland character since the 1970s), and ends in Meo Vac. The third day is the most varied: you ride Ma Pi Leng Pass with steep drops on one side, swim in the Nho Que River, take a boat trip into Hem Tu San, the deepest canyon in Southeast Asia, have lunch on a bamboo raft in Ban An Stream, and finish at Du Gia Village with a swim at Du Gia Waterfall. The final day starts at 9am and includes a visit to Lung Tam Weaving Village, where you can watch H'Mong artisans at work on a 200-year-old linen craft and try weaving yourself, then lunch in Nam Dam Village before heading back to Ha Giang by 4pm.
Every night you stay in a private bungalow or room with its own bathroom in a homestay, not a shared dorm or a party hostel. The operator keeps groups to a maximum of six riders per guide so the experience stays personal and the stops can happen when they matter. Protective gear (helmet, raincoat and protective clothing) is provided, along with free mineral water throughout the day. The guide speaks English and is trained to read the group's pace and comfort, which is how a four-day loop avoids feeling rushed even though it covers the major passes and villages.
You'll need a valid motorcycle license and should be comfortable riding on mountain roads with hairpin turns and steep grades. The itinerary works for all fitness levels because the riding pace is steady rather than aggressive, and the guide stops frequently to rest, swim and explore. If you have dietary needs (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free), let the operator know at booking and they'll arrange meals in the homestays and villages accordingly.

Is this one for you?Choose the private tour if your group wants its own pace and guide. Choose the group tour to ride with other travelers and share the cost. Either way, the small maximum of six riders per guide means the stops happen when they should (at a mountain pass with the view, at a village where the guide knows someone, at a river where swimming makes sense) rather than on a fixed schedule.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (5 to 11 years). Under 5: they can't be included in the booking.
What's the difference between the 4-day and 3-day Ha Giang Loop?
The 4-day version includes all the major passes and adds a full day in the Meo Vac and Du Gia area, so you get the Nho Que River boat trip into Hem Tu San canyon, lunch on a bamboo raft, Du Gia Waterfall, and a visit to Lung Tam Weaving Village where you can try H'Mong linen weaving. A 3-day tour skips some of these stops to fit the shorter timeframe.
Can I book this as a private tour, or does it have to be a group?
You can choose either a private tour or a group tour at checkout. Private tours run with just your group and your own guide. Group tours combine multiple riders with one guide. Both options are available with or without bus tickets for transport to and from Hanoi, Sapa or Ninh Binh on the first and last days.
What happens if I'm not an experienced motorcycle rider?
The tour is suitable for all fitness levels and the guide adjusts the pace to the group. The roads are challenging, steep mountain passes with hairpin turns, but the guide leads at a steady speed and stops frequently. If you're nervous about riding, mention it when you book and the guide will brief you on technique and take extra time on the first day.
Do I need to arrange my own transport to Ha Giang, or is it included?
Transport from Ha Giang city is included in the tour itself. If you're starting from Hanoi, Sapa or Ninh Binh, you can add bus tickets as an option at checkout. The bus picks you up on day one and returns you after the tour ends on day four at 4pm.
What's included in the price and what costs extra?
The tour includes the motorcycle, guide, accommodation in private homestays, helmet and protective gear, and free mineral water. Meals are not included in the base price but are arranged in local restaurants and homestays. Beverages beyond water, tips and a border permit (if required) are separate. If you weigh over 100kg, there's an additional charge of 60 USD for the four days.
