The experience
The loop starts from Ha Giang City and heads into terrain that tests both driver and passenger. Day one takes you over Bac Sum Slope (a road of sharp switchbacks clinging to the mountainside), then through Twin Mountains, into Lung Khuy Cave with its stalactites and stalagmites, and down to Lung Tam village, where Hmong weavers still work linen by hand using techniques passed down for generations. You end the first night in a homestay in Yên Minh, eating local dishes with the family.
Day two climbs toward Vietnam's northernmost point. Tham Ma Slope and the Nine Turns Slope both demand attention on the winding ascent. The old saying goes that even horses hesitate on this road. The Hmong King's Palace (built in the early 1900s at a cost equivalent to millions today) sits on a hilltop chosen by feng shui masters. From there, the route reaches Lung Cu Flag Tower, standing at the country's edge where the mountains of Vietnam and China meet. The second night is in Dong Van, another homestay in town.
Day three is the most dramatic. The Sky Walk viewpoint (also called Death Cliff) offers a sheer drop and panoramic views. Ma Pi Leng Pass, known as the king of Vietnam's mountain passes, winds through towering cliffs above the emerald Nho Que River far below. The M-shaped curve and Lung Ho Viewpoint follow, each one a stop where the landscape shifts. The day ends in Du Gia village, a quiet place of rice terraces and rolling hills where you stay in another homestay.
Day four is the return. You pass Du Gia Waterfall, Duong Thuong Viewpoint, and Thai An (a route that runs through mountains, rivers and more waterfalls) before arriving back at Strawberry House in Ha Giang City. Entrance fees to the palace, flag tower, cave and river are included. You choose either a self-drive motorbike or a shared tour with guide and transport arranged.

Is this one for you?Choose the shared-group option with guide and transport if you want someone navigating the winding roads while you focus on the landscape and stops. Pick the self-drive motorbike if you prefer to set your own pace and handle the roads yourself. Either way, four days is the right length to cross all the major passes and spend genuine time in the villages without rushing.
