The experience

You start from Ha Giang city at 8am and ride 1.5 to 2 hours to Thon Tha and Ha Thanh villages for a hike and swim in the waterfall before the bikes take over. The first day pushes through Minh Tan village, enters the Dong Van Global Karst Plateau Geopark, Vietnam's first, and passes the Quan Ba twin mountains and Bac Sum pass. By late afternoon you walk 1.2km into Lung Khuy Cave, the largest inside the Geopark, then ride to Nam Dam village to sleep in a private room at a Dao family's homestay. Dinner and music are part of the evening.

Day two climbs 38km to Yen Minh over the Can Ty pass, stops at Lao Chai valley to see terraced rice fields, and reaches Sa Phin village for lunch and a visit to the Hmong King palace. The afternoon ride goes north to the Lung Cu National Flagpole, where you stand at Vietnam's northernmost point and look across to China. You end the day in Dong Van town at a small hotel, free to walk the ancient town before dinner. Day three tackles Ma Pi Leng Pass (one of Vietnam's four most beautiful passes), and stops at Sa Li pass to photograph Dao villages and rice terraces from above before arriving at Du Gia village for another homestay night with the Tay people.

The final morning includes Du Gia waterfall, then a 45km ride back to Ha Giang passing Hmong villages and stopping at Lung Tam to watch hemp weaving, an ancient Hmong craft. Lunch happens in Nam Dam village, and the tour ends at the city viewpoint with a final coffee or beer with your guide before 5:30pm. All four nights include private rooms and family dinners. The guide speaks English or Vietnamese and handles logistics so you focus on riding.

Is this one for you?The tour runs four full days of riding over mountain passes with early starts (8am) and long days in the saddle, so it suits riders comfortable on bikes for 4–6 hours daily and ready for a high level of physical activity. Groups stay small, 2 to 8 people, so you get personal attention from the guide and the flexibility to set your own pace on the road while the group stays together.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and Vietnamese.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What is the Dong Van Karst Plateau and why is it on this route?

The Dong Van Karst Plateau is Vietnam's first UNESCO Geopark, a limestone landscape in northern Ha Giang marked by dramatic peaks, caves, and passes. It is the centerpiece of the Ha Giang Loop because it contains most of the route's major stops (Lung Khuy Cave, the twin mountains at Quan Ba, Ma Pi Leng Pass, and the Lung Cu flagpole) making it the geographic and cultural heart of the four-day ride.

Do I need my own motorcycle license and experience to join this tour?

Yes, you ride your own bike throughout the four days, so you need a valid motorcycle license and comfortable riding experience on mountain roads. The tour is self-drive, meaning you control your own pace on the route, though the group stays together and the guide leads the way.

What are the homestays like, and who do I stay with?

You sleep in private rooms in family-run homestays in Nam Dam village (Dao people), Du Gia village (Tay people), and one night in a small hotel in Dong Van town. Each homestay includes a family dinner in the evening and traditional music. The rooms are basic but private, and breakfast is served each morning before riding.

How much riding happens each day, and what is the terrain like?

Day one covers roughly 80–100km with a morning hike; day two is about 100km; day three is roughly 60–80km with stops at passes and villages; day four is about 100km back to Ha Giang. The roads are mountain passes and scenic routes through the Geopark, with frequent photo stops and village visits that break up the riding time.

What happens if the weather turns bad or I get tired during the ride?

The itinerary is flexible and designed by local guides who know the terrain and conditions. If weather worsens or a rider needs rest, the group can adjust the pace or the route. Public transportation options are available nearby if you need an alternative to riding on any day.

Will I see traditional crafts or learn about local culture beyond the villages?

Yes, on day four you stop at Lung Tam village to watch and learn about hemp weaving, an ancient Hmong craft still practiced there. You also visit the Hmong King palace on day two and pass through multiple ethnic villages (Tay, Dao, and Hmong), where you stay overnight and eat with families, giving you direct contact with the people and their daily life.
