I’ll be honest — I was nervous about the motorbike. The night before in Ha Giang City, I barely slept at Lila Hostel (free dorm bed included, by the way), just thinking about those winding roads. But our guide Minh met us early with this easy warmth — he joked about my helmet hair and handed me a raincoat “just in case.” By the time we hit Bac Sum Pass, the air smelled like wet grass and exhaust, and my nerves had mostly turned into excitement. The road really does snake along those cliffs. At Khau Lan Waterfall, I could hear nothing but water crashing and birds somewhere out of sight. We stopped for lunch in Quan Ba — rice, pork, something pickled that Minh said was “good for your stomach.” He laughed when I tried to say it in Vietnamese. Probably butchered it.

The next day was all sharp turns and wild views on the Dong Van Karst Plateau. It’s not just scenery; you actually feel the rock under your wheels. We passed through villages where kids waved (sometimes a little shy), and at Lung Tam Linen Cooperative I tried weaving for maybe two minutes before giving up — my hands just aren’t made for it. The H’Mong King Palace felt like stepping into another time; cool stone walls, wooden beams that creaked if you leaned wrong. Lunch in Sa Phin was noisy with locals chatting over bowls of soup. Later, standing at Vietnam’s northernmost point looking out over China — it was windy enough to sting your eyes a bit.

Third morning started slow with coffee in Dong Van ancient town (if you’re there on Sunday, don’t miss the ethnic market — it’s loud and full of color). Then Ma Pi Leng Pass: honestly, no photo does it justice. You can hike up White Cliff or take a boat down Nho Que River; we picked the boat because my legs were jelly by then. The water is this unreal shade of green-blue. At A Boong Waterfall later that afternoon, I dunked my head under — freezing but worth it after all that dust and sun.

By the time we rolled back into Ha Giang City, clothes damp from waterfall spray and rain showers (the weather changes fast here), I felt like I’d lived a month in three days. Still think about that first view from Ma Pi Leng sometimes — how small everything looked below us.
