The Experience

The jeep picks you up at 8:30 am on day one and climbs into the mountains immediately. You stop at Bac Sum Slope to see the valley open below you, then drive up to Heaven Gate at over 1,300 meters where the air changes and the view stretches across two provinces. From there you drop down to Nam Dam, a clay-house village where Dao ethnic minorities have lived for generations — you walk through it for about two and a half hours, see how the houses are built, and eat lunch with the family. The road keeps winding: Lung Tam village where people still weave cloth by hand, then Yen Minh where you sleep in a homestay.

Day two takes you to Tham Ma Slope, a nine-step road that climbs for an hour with stops for photographs. You visit Sung La village, then Lung Cu Flag Pole, where you stand at the border between Vietnam and China and can see across both territories. The views from the pole are enormous — the kind of thing a motorbike rider cannot stop long enough to absorb. Lo Lo Chai village comes next, built the same way as Nam Dam, and then you drive to Dong Van Town and the H'mong King Palace, the old residence of the Vuong family, before settling into another homestay.

Day three is the centerpiece: Ma Pi Leng Pass. The road to it is called the Happiness Road and it winds through cliffs at 2,000 meters altitude — the most famous pass in the north, often called the king of all Vietnamese passes. You ride down the Sky Path to see the Nho Que River far below and the whole valley at once, then stop at viewpoints to photograph the panorama. After the pass you drive through Meo Vac town (stopping at the market if it is a market day), cross the M Road where the slope looks like the letter M, and arrive at Du Gia Village. Seven ethnic minorities live there together, and the village is known for its colors and its cultures. You stay with a Tay family, eat dinner, and drink the local rice wine.

The last morning starts with Du Gia Waterfall, a hidden spot you explore before breakfast. Then the jeep takes you back across Duong Thuong Valley and Thai An Road, through Sky Gate, and down to Ha Giang by around 3 pm. All four breakfasts, four lunches and three dinners are included, along with 1.5 liters of water per day and the driver's fuel. The guide speaks English throughout.

What’s included

  • Experience with a professional English-speaking driver and fuel for the vintage army jeep.
  • entrance fees to all villages and historical sites.
  • all meals (four breakfasts, four lunches, three dinners).
  • three nights' accommodation in private rooms at traditional homestays or bungalows.
  • and 1.5 liters of water daily.

Is this one for you?The English-speaking guide means you understand the history and culture of each village and the border area without needing to translate or guess — useful if you want context for what you are seeing, not just the views themselves. Children from age one are welcome, and the jeep is suitable for all fitness levels, so families and mixed-ability groups can travel together without splitting up.

Top questions

What is Ma Pi Leng Pass and why is it the main draw of this tour?

Ma Pi Leng Pass is the most famous mountain pass in Northern Vietnam, located at 2,000 meters altitude on the Happiness Road between Dong Van and Meo Vac. The road winds through dramatic cliffs, and from the peak you see the Nho Que River valley far below and the panorama of mountains stretching across both sides of the Vietnam-China border — a view you cannot get from any other route in Ha Giang.

Do I need a motorbike license or special experience to ride in the open-air jeep?

No license or experience is required. You sit in the back of a vintage army jeep as a passenger; the driver handles all the driving. The jeep is more comfortable and safer than a motorbike, and you stay less tired over the four days because you are not balancing or steering.

What are the homestays like, and will I have a private room?

You stay three nights in traditional homestays or bungalows in private rooms. On day one and two you stay in Yen Minh and Dong Van; on day three you stay with a Tay minority family in Du Gia Village. The accommodations are typical of the region and give you a chance to experience local life and eat meals with the host family.

Which ethnic villages do we visit, and what do we do there?

You visit Nam Dam (Dao ethnic minority), Sung La, Lo Lo Chai (Lo Lo ethnic minority), and Du Gia Village (seven ethnic minorities living together). In each village you walk around, see how the clay houses are built, learn about local culture and history, and spend time with families. In Lung Tam you visit a family that makes handicrafts and weaves cloth by hand.

Is the Lung Cu Flag Pole really at the Vietnam-China border?

Yes. Lung Cu Flag Pole marks the border between Vietnam and China territory. Standing on the peak, you see the border area and the views across both sides — it is one of the most significant viewpoints on the tour and one of the northernmost points you can reach in Vietnam.

What meals are included, and will there be food I recognize?

All four breakfasts, four lunches and three dinners are included. You eat authentic local food, including meals with the host families at the homestays. On day one you have lunch in Quan Ba with the local family; on day three you have dinner and local rice wine with the Tay family in Du Gia Village. The tour also includes 1.5 liters of water per day.
