Two Days in an Open Jeep Across Ha Giang's Limestone Loop

You spend two days in an open-air jeep crossing the Dong Van Karst Plateau, standing up to see Pac Sum Pass, Heaven Gate, and Ma Pi Leng Pass — the limestone loop's most dramatic stretches. The tour includes all meals, one night in a traditional house in Dong Van, an English-speaking guide, and pickup from Ha Giang city, so you show up at 8:30 am and don't arrange transport, accommodation, or entry fees yourself.

The Experience

The jeep leaves Ha Giang city at 8:30 am, and within ten minutes the urban noise drops away. You're climbing into mountains on roads that switchback hard, and the landscape opens up — limestone peaks stacked like broken teeth, valleys so deep they look painted on. The open-air jeep means you stand up to see it all, no windscreen between you and the view, which sounds uncomfortable until you realize how much cooler it is up there and how much steadier the ride feels than a motorbike. By mid-morning you're at Pac Sum Pass, over 1,000 meters up, where the air changes temperature and the valley spreads out below like a map someone unfolded. Coffee tastes different at that height. You stop long enough to breathe and take pictures, then drive on to Heaven Gate — the name fits once you see it — and into Nam Dam village where Dao minority families live and work. Your guide talks through the culture without rushing you, and you actually absorb something instead of just passing through.

Lunch is at a local restaurant in Yen Minh with views of rice terraces that tier down the hillside. After that comes Ma Pi Leng Pass, the road everyone says is the most beautiful part of the Ha Giang Loop. It's a nine-step descent carved into the karst, and from the open jeep you can see the Nho Que River threading through the valley floor, thousands of meters below. The driver knows the road — he's done this hundreds of times — so you're free to stand and stare instead of gripping the seat. You stop at viewpoints to walk around, and the silence up there is the kind that makes you forget what noise sounds like. By evening you're in Dong Van town, checked into a traditional house that's actually comfortable, with time to walk the streets and eat dinner without a schedule pushing you forward.

Day two starts the same way — breakfast, then back in the jeep at 8:30 am — but the route takes you through Happy Road and straight into Ma Pi Leng again from the other direction, which changes how it looks. You pass through Meo Vac (and if it's market day, you stop for thirty minutes to see what locals actually buy and sell), then the M Slope, then the Mau Due valley before lunch. The drive back to Ha Giang follows the same passes you came up — Quan Ba, Pac Sum — but you see them in reverse, which somehow makes them look different. The tour finishes around 5 or 5:30 pm, and you're back in Ha Giang city with enough daylight left to figure out your next move.

What’s included

Your two days include pickup and drop-off from Ha Giang city, all meals (two breakfasts, two lunches, and one dinner), one night in a private room in a traditional house in Dong Van, an English-speaking tour guide, the open-air jeep with a professional driver and fuel, and all entrance fees to villages and historical sites you visit along the Dong Van Karst Plateau.
