The Experience

I didn’t expect to start the day with my shoes soaked — but Wadi Darbat had other plans. The waterfall was running (lucky for us, our guide said it’s not always), and the air smelled green, if that makes sense. We watched a few kids paddle by in bright boats while goats picked their way along the rocks. I tried kayaking too; nearly spun myself in circles but hey, the view of Jabal Qara from the water is worth looking a little silly for. Our guide, Khalid, pointed out a patch of wild mint growing near the bank and told us how locals use it in tea — I pinched a leaf and it really did smell sharp and sweet.

Taqa Castle surprised me — it’s not huge or flashy but there’s something about those thick limestone walls that feels solid, like time just moves slower inside. We wandered through rooms full of old jewelry and kitchen pots. Khalid explained how families used to gather in the majlis; he even showed us where they’d keep dates to dry up on the roof (I tried saying ‘majlis’ right, but he just grinned). Outside, you catch this salty breeze from Taqa Beach — we saw fishermen mending nets and a couple of herons poking around tide pools. I could’ve stayed longer but lunch was calling.

After some rice and grilled fish (simple but so good), we drove past Haffa Beach with its coconut stalls under crooked palm trees. I bought a coconut from an old guy who split it open with one swing of his knife — cold juice dribbling down my chin before I even realized I was thirsty. We stopped at a frankincense farm on the way west; you can’t go in but you can smell that resin on the wind if you stand still long enough. It’s sort of spicy-sweet, like old books mixed with pine.

Mughsail Beach is wild — waves crash hard here, louder than I expected. The blowholes at Marneef cave were going strong; spray shot up so fast it startled me more than once (Khalid laughed every time). There’s this off-road stretch to Fazayah Beach after that where the cliffs drop into turquoise water — hardly anyone else around except for two kids chasing crabs along the shore. By then my hair was full of salt and my skin sticky from sunblock but honestly? I still think about that view when things get noisy back home.
