The experience

How do you see six distinct landscapes (a fort, a waterfall, a 200-meter sinkhole, giant baobab trees and an ancient port city) without spending the whole day driving? This tour strings them together across East Salalah's coast and inland valleys, starting with pickup from your hotel and a drive to Taqah, where the old town sits on one of the region's widest sandy beaches. Taqah Castle, the former governor's residence, now holds displays on local history and Dhofari life. Because the castle is currently under maintenance, you get extra time at the nearby Taqah Viewpoint Cliff instead, a high rocky perch overlooking the Indian Ocean.

From there the route turns inland to Darbat Waterfalls, a valley known as one of the two most-visited natural spots in Dhofar. A spring feeds a natural lake, and herds of camels, cattle and goats graze the surrounding slopes. Twenty minutes further up into the Jaballi mountain settlement sits Tawi Attair, the "well of birds": a limestone sinkhole plunging 211 meters deep, its walls riddled with nesting birds whose calls echo from the opening. The guide explains the geology while you stand at the viewpoint. Fifteen minutes down the other side of Samhan mountain lies the Zero Gravity Point, a stretch of road where a car in neutral appears to roll uphill, a natural phenomenon worth experiencing firsthand.

The final two stops are the baobab trees of Wadi Hinnah (rare giants up to 25 meters tall, found nowhere else in the region outside of Africa), and Sumhuram Ruins, a UNESCO World Heritage site perched on a hilltop overlooking the ocean. The ruins mark the remains of an ancient port city that traded Dhofari frankincense for centuries. An information center screens a six-minute film framing the site's history. The whole day runs six to eight hours. Private transport means your group travels together. A 2-3 person group uses one 4WD vehicle with one guide and one driver, a 4-6 person group uses one 4WD with both, and a 7-9 person group travels in two 4WD cars with one guide and two drivers. Bottled water and an air-conditioned vehicle are included.

What is Tawi Attair and why is it called the well of birds?

Tawi Attair is a limestone sinkhole 211 meters deep (roughly the height of a 60-story building) located 20 minutes' drive inland from Darbat Waterfalls. The name means "well of birds" because thousands of birds nest in the walls of the opening. You'll hear their calls echoing from the viewpoint where the guide takes you to observe the formation.

Can I visit Taqah Castle on this tour?

Taqah Castle is currently under maintenance, so the tour spends extra time at the nearby Taqah Viewpoint Cliff instead, which offers panoramic views of the Indian Ocean and the coastline from high above the rocky cliffs.

What are the baobab trees and where do I see them?

Baobab trees are rare giants found in Wadi Hinnah on Samhan mountain, some reaching up to 25 meters tall with a trunk diameter of 2 meters. Dhofar has about 200 of these trees, making them an unusual sight outside of Africa. You'll have time to photograph them and walk among them.

How long does the full tour take and what's the driving like?

The tour runs six to eight hours total, with stops at six different sites spread across East Salalah's coast and inland valleys. You travel in an air-conditioned 4WD vehicle. Some stops like the archaeological site and baobab valley involve light walking and climbing stairs, but the tour suits all fitness levels.

Does the tour include hotel pickup and how does the vehicle work for different group sizes?

Hotel pickup is included in the price. A group of two to three people travels in one 4WD with one guide and one driver; four to six people use one 4WD with one guide and two drivers; seven to nine people travel in two separate 4WD vehicles with one guide and two drivers total.

What's included in the tour price?

The tour includes private transport from your hotel, an air-conditioned vehicle, a local guide who speaks English or Arabic, entry fees to all six sites, and bottled water throughout the day.
