The experience

The tour starts in Taqah, a fishing village on Oman's southern coast known for its traditional Dhofari houses and dried sardine production. From there, the route climbs to Jebel Samhan Plateau at almost 1,700 meters, where the views open across the east coast on one side and the Qara mountain range on the other: what locals call the Grand Canyon of Dhofar. The drive itself is part of the experience: you're moving through terrain that shifts from coastal town to high plateau in a single morning.

Wadi Darbat is the centerpiece, a lush valley with cascading waterfalls (seasonal), clear pools, and towering cliffs. The itinerary includes a walk through the wadi's paths, and you can choose to add boating on the pools at your own expense if the water level allows. Baobab trees (massive, oddly shaped giants native to Africa) stand throughout Wadi Hannah nearby, creating an otherworldly landscape. Tawi Attair sinkhole sits on the route as well. Descending into it is optional and demands good fitness, but the views from above are accessible to everyone. Ayn Hasir spring offers a quieter moment to rest.
