Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Dhofar region and desert sites

  • Visit Wadi Dawkah frankincense trees
  • Explore Thumrait town and souk
  • Tour Wubar ancient ruins
  • Experience the Empty Quarter desert

The experience

The tour starts in Salalah and heads north to Wadi Dawkah, where thousands of ancient frankincense trees grow in a stony, semi-desert valley. The wadi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the guide explains the traditional methods of harvesting the sap that made this region famous across the ancient world. You walk through the tranquil groves at your own pace, seeing how the trees have survived in this harsh landscape for centuries.

From there the route passes through Thumrait, a commercial hub surrounded by fertile plains where farmers grow dates, mangoes and pomegranates. The town's souk sells local handicrafts and traditional Omani textiles, and the guide can point out what makes the region's agriculture distinct. Then you move on to Wubar, the archaeological site known as the "Atlantis of the Sands," where well-preserved ruins and underground irrigation channels show what a major frankincense-trade hub looked like before it was mysteriously abandoned. The admission fee of 3 OMR per person is separate from the tour price.

The final stretch takes you into the Empty Quarter, the world's largest continuous sand desert. The dunes here reach over 300 meters high, and the landscape shifts as the sun drops toward the horizon. The guide navigates the terrain and shares what survives in this environment: sand gazelles, Arabian oryx, and adapted reptile species. You end the day watching the desert light change under the open sky.
