The Experience

I didn’t expect Wadi Dawkha to smell so sharp and green. The frankincense trees look almost prehistoric—twisted arms stretching out against a sky that felt way too big for one place. Our guide, Salim, broke off a tiny bit of resin and let us hold it. It stuck to my fingers, sticky but sweet-smelling. I tried to imagine how caravans used to pass through here, but honestly, it was just so quiet except for the wind scraping over rocks.

We stopped in Thumrait for Omani tea—karak, they call it. It’s milky and spiced, not at all like what I drink back home. The old man running the tea stall smiled when I tried to say “shukran.” My accent must have been terrible because he laughed and poured me a second cup anyway. After that we drove on to Ubar. I’d read about this place—the “Atlantis of the Sands”—but standing there among those sun-bleached ruins made it feel more real somehow. There’s not much left except some crumbling walls and sand swallowing everything up.

The black camels were next—sleek and almost blue in the late light. One of them stared right at me while chewing something (probably judging my hat). Then came the Rub' al Khali desert itself. The sand is fine, like flour, and gets everywhere—my shoes are probably still full of it. Sunset here isn’t loud or dramatic; it just sort of melts into golds and pinks until you can’t tell where the sky ends. We sat quietly on top of a dune with our guide until it got dark enough that you could hear your own breath again. I still think about that view sometimes when things get noisy.
